We can do this! We are in our senior year of college now 01 how??? , and were recently discussing how much this reminds us of senior year of high school.   In high school, we stayed up extra hours to apply to that extra scholarship and that extra school. Now, we are staying up extra hours to apply to that extra internship and that extra job. In high school, we stressed about not being qualified enough to get into the schools we dreamed of, and tried to sign up for extra courses only to drop them two week into the year. Now, we are stressing about not being qualified enough to get a job, and tried registering for extra classes only to drop them two week into the semester. In high school, we existentially asked ourselves “what schools do we even want to apply to???” and ended up applying to WAY too many because of indecisiveness. Now, we are existentially asking ourselves “what jobs do we even want to apply to???” and are applying to WAY too many because of indecisiveness.   We didn’t expect this, but it is actually uncanny how déjà vu senior year of college feels. It’s also a bit upsetting, because we distinctly remember thinking we’d never have to experience the torture of filling out infinite applications again after finishing all our college apps. But here we are, filling out infinite job applications, and dreading the process. Cover letters are absolutely painful to write.   Okay, let’s backtrack a bit. We aren’t writing this post to complain into the void about how annoying applications are to fill out. Though, it was very cathartic to write these first two paragraphs. 02 feel free to vent about your application-filling-out-frustrations in the comment section if you want to! We wanted to write this as a message to our present selves, our high school senior selves, and to you to take a step back, breathe, relax, and self-care! In just this first month of school, we have already reached high levels of stress from this job-hunt season. In just under 4 weeks, all the self-care we practiced over the summer was thrown out the window. We have sacrificed sleep to fill out these applications, gone down unproductive thought avenues about being not good enough, and have pressured and pushed ourselves to apply to jobs we are not actually interested in because “why not?”   We remember doing this exact thing in high school with college applications! Being a senior, whether in high school or college, is just really hard! Uncertainty is right on the horizon, and it feels like the culmination of the first three years’ hard work is going up against the dice of fate. It is scary and stressful.   So, let’s all go easy on ourselves, okay? Let’s all support each other, let’s all try our best to prioritize getting enough sleep, and let’s all dedicate time to doing the things that heal us. As a step in that direction, we want to share a list of things that we have been watching/listening to recently as part of our self-care and destress routine. 03 And we encourage you all to comment your self-care things too! We watched this so many times during this month, and listened to all the songs on repeat. Our favorites are Independent Together, Drift Away, Change, and Happily Ever After. She’s so funny and real, so we’ve been slowly making our way through her content. Other favorites are her videos about Meal Prep and Creativity. Watching all of Caleb Hyles Steven Universe Covers We found a very nerdy Youtube cover artist who has covered pretty much EVERY Steven Universe song! He has an AMAZING voice, and dances without a care in the world in many videos! Our favorites are Haven’t You Noticed I’m a Star and Peace and Love. Obsessively Listening to Jennifer Hudson singing Memory in the Cats Trailer We have always LOVED the song Memory from Cats, so when the trailer came out with Jennifer Hudson singing it absolutely incredibly, we literally just played the trailer on loop. Jennifer Hudson is just amazing. The end. Listening to the Hadestown Soundtrack Hadestown was the winner for Best Musical at the most recent Tony Awards and it is Fantastic. Its a twist on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice! We LOVED their performance at the Tony’s and were waiting almost all summer for the full cast album to be released! All the songs are amazing! Eva Noblezada and Reeve Carney and Amber Grey (who was in the Great Comet, one of our fav musicals which we have definitely talked about on the blogs before lol) have such unique and amazing voices! Our favorite songs are Come Home With Me, All I’ve Ever Known, and Wait For Me (all in the playlist linked)!   Clearly, what we go to when we are trying to destress is cartoons, music from cartoons, random funny videos, and musicals. To truly understand Deadman, you must be able to understand how the movie is set up. It is common to not be able to understand many concepts in life from one person’s point of view. Lucky for the viewers of Deadman there are multiple ways to map the movie. In the following paragraphs I will fully explain one way to map out the movie Deadman; by just watching the train ride in the beginning of the movie views will learn to understand what is going to happen throughout the whole movie without even watching the movie. I will also go over some very important concepts that are done in Deadman that some without prior knowledge would most often not understand. Why did I give you this random information? It is an important part of the movie as a whole. It also relates directly to the beginning of Dead Man’s movie map. As the train keeps traveling, the views will start to notice a difference in the setting as well as the other characters. One of the first things noticed is that women start to appear on the train. This may not seem like anything important to most but it is important to the map of the movie. After William Blake gets the town of Machine, and then to the location of his alleged job, he realizes that he does not fit in there he seems to be all on his own. When he goes out and meets a woman, Thel Russel. She is the start of all of William Blakes problems. Next in the map the viewers will notice that the men that are on the train are not dressed even half as nice as the men from Cleveland. The hair looks very unkept and gross. Stop your procrastination. Why do we procrastinate? Research suggests that students often procrastinate when they perceive the dissertation as an overwhelming task. Big surprise, huh? Motivation is the biggest problem that grad students face in writing the dissertation. A Lonely Time The dissertation is a time consuming and lonely process that usually takes about two years (and often longer). The dissertation often is a major blow to a graduate students self-esteem. It is not uncommon to feel as if its an insurmountable task that will never be completed. Organization and Time Management are Key The keys to completing the dissertation promptly are organization and time management. The lack of structure is the difficult part of the dissertation because the students role is to plan, carry out, and write up a research project (sometimes several). A structure must be applied in order to complete this task. One way of providing structure is to view the dissertation as a series of steps, rather than as one mammoth task. Use Incentives to Assist You in Overcoming Procrastination. Writing requires consistent, well-organized effort and a system of self-imposed incentives to overcome procrastination. What kind of incentives work? Although it depends on the individual, a safe bet is taking time off from work. We found vegetation time such as time spent playing computer games to be helpful as an incentive to reinforce progress. Methodically Break Through Writers Block. When it is difficult to write, talk through your ideas to anyone who will listen, or just talk out loud to yourself. Write out your thoughts without criticizing them. Take time to warm up, by writing to clear your thoughts. Get the ideas out without scrutinizing each sentence; it is often easier to edit than it is to write. Work through your ideas by writing, THEN edit extensively. You will write many drafts of each section of the dissertation; a first (second, or even third) draft need not approach perfection. In addition, it is acceptable to use dashes to mark when you cannot find the appropriate word to express your idea, but want to go on; just remember to fill in the dashes later. The important thing is that you develop a pattern of producing some output regularly that output can be edited or even thrown out, but it is important to produce something. Recognize and Accept the Fact That Writing Is a Time-consuming Process. Dont Rush Yourself. No draft will be perfect that first time around. Expect to go through several drafts of each section of your dissertation. Once you feel comfortable with a particular section, take time away from it. Ask others to read your writing and consider their comments and criticisms with an open mind. After a few days or a week, reread the section and edit again; you may be quite surprised by the impact of a fresh perspective. Writing the dissertation is much like running a marathon. The seemingly insurmountable may be attained through a series of small goals and deadlines. Accomplishing each small goal may provide additional momentum. Make consistent progress each day, use incentives to assist you in attaining your goals, and acknowledge that the dissertation will require time, hard work, and patience.
